Michael A. Fornaro, PhD. is the visionary driving force behind the success of a distinguished interior architecture firm for over 20 years. Holding a Doctorate in Philosophy in Urban Studies and Public Affairs from Cleveland State University, Michael’s academic focus centered on urban environments, public policies, and the intricate social, economic, and political systems that shape cities and communities. His doctoral research delved into the transformative power of art in urban revitalization, exploring how art initiatives, cultural investments, and creative programs can rejuvenate communities. This work also examined the critical interplay of factors such as housing, transportation, economic development, and inequality in the evolution and governance of cities.
Michael’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Environmental Design and Interior Design from Bowling Green State University, followed by a Master’s degree in Architecture from Miami University. To further refine his expertise, he pursued advanced coursework at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, specializing in community planning and design. Additionally, Michael recently completed online courses in Art Market Economics, The Contemporary Art World: Theory and Structure, and Art Now: Contemporary Art Since 1990. This dedication to continuous learning ensures his knowledge remains current and aligned with the ever-evolving fields of art, architecture, and urban design.
Beyond his professional achievements, Michael is a passionate advocate for the arts and an active participant in the arts community. He serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Fine Arts at Florida State University, collaborating with the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts to develop innovative strategies and curate events that enhance public appreciation of the arts. As part of this role, he contributes to fundraising efforts that support the Museum and the College of Fine Arts.
In his capacity as Chair of the Student Engagement Committee, Michael inspires student participation and fosters meaningful dialogue about the arts, encouraging a lifelong connection to creative expression. He is also a proud member of the Chairman’s Circle and a dedicated supporter of the Ringling Museum’s Outreach Program, which provides access to art and educational opportunities for underprivileged children and families in Sarasota County and neighboring communities. Michael’s unwavering commitment to these initiatives reflects his deep passion for making the arts accessible, impactful, and integral to community enrichment.
Michael’s academic and community involvement is further enriched by his tenure as an Associate Professor of Interior Design at Converse University in Spartanburg, South Carolina. There, he played a pivotal role in leading the department to achieve CIDA accreditation, overcoming two prior unsuccessful attempts. He taught a wide range of courses, including Art History I & II, The History of Design, History of 20th Century Art and Textiles, Furniture Design I & II, and Interior Design Fundamentals. Additionally, he developed and enhanced curricula for interior design and architecture programs, ensuring their academic rigor and alignment with industry standards.
In 2020, driven by his passion for fine art, Michael expanded his professional focus to include fine art appraisal. He later became a member of the International Society of Appraisers (ISA), and USPAP-Compliant specializing in Fine Art and Decorative Objects.
